Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing your web site, or web pages content, so that it ranks as high as possible in search engine results. Doing this is largely trial and error because of many factors, one of course being that there are many search engines and each one determines how well you rank differently. For example, Google.com may determine that having a specific keyword in your site is not quite as important as how many other website's have a link back to you, but MSN.com is far more concerned with how often that phrase is repeated with in your site, and Yahoo.com may decide that if you repeat a word to often you are "keyword stuffing" or trying to spam the search engines resulting in your being banned from that engine.

It is a tricky process, and requires monitoring and constant fine adjustment. You can rank on top of a search engine after weeks of hard work and then be sent to the bottom over night by competitors optimizing better than you or simple policy changes by the search engines.
